The Grey Mist Clan

The Grey Mist Clan is a nomadic criminal organization that has spread its influence throughout the southern Scavenger Lands. Stories of the Clan go back to the Shogunate Era and they all retain a common theme. Every few generations a ‘hero’ cleanses the land of the Clan’s influence and the Clan disappears for a generation or two. However, they always seem to return and in numbers and power comparable to what it had prior to its apparent defeat. The headquarters of the Clan changes with every rebirth, as does its contacts and particular areas of influence, though most of its outward traditions appear to remain. The actual machinations and true intent of the Clan are unknown to all outsiders, and those who are members aren’t talking. The Clan’s most recent resurgence was 58 years ago and in that time has made surprising strides.
Members of the Clan are distinguished by their long grey masks, with stylized eyes and teeth marked across them. The masks serve many purposes, protecting the identity of the wearer, unnerving their enemies, and identifying the wearer as a member of the Clan. Those who seek to impersonate the Clan by making or buying a similar mask are generally not heard or seen from again.
Known for their brutal tactics, frightening appearance, and alleged use of necromancy few dare to cross the Grey Mist. However, they remain a criminal organization that is focused upon profit. They retain an understanding with the Guild and generally only terrorize caravans and the occasional isolated village. They deal mainly in illicit drugs, slaves, artifacts, contract killing, and the granting of wishes. The last of these is what brings many into contact with the Grey Mist, though the price is often steep and unexpected, the wish is almost always granted. There are many stories of desperate parents pleading with the Grey Mist Clan to save their child from an illness that all others have failed to save.
While many organizations such as the Grey Mist would not halt at working with the Fair Folk, the Clan is well-known for its rejection of any dealings with these creatures. Indeed, there are stories of a village being set upon by both Fair Folk and the Grey Mist simultaneously, with both sides ignoring the defenseless villagers in between in order to fight each other.
